Turmion Kätilöt: Pirun nyrkki
06/06/06 || Statik Majik
I’m personally not that much into Rammstein. Their music is pretty fucken energetic and I dig it, but I just can’t stand the German language. It sounds just a bit too “porn” for my taste. So when a friend of mine recommended me this new release from Turmion Kätilöt with the words “it’s like Rammstein, except they sing in Finnish” that got me curious ( Yes, I do know that Finnish language is even worse than German ). And when I had an extra twenty euros in my wallet I decided to buy this disc. Without givin’ it a one single test-spin at the record store. I know, how courageous of me.
The little I have heard of Rammstein, I think Tuomion Kätilöt couldn’t be categorized as an exact Rammstein copy. But it sure as hell is influenced by the aforementioned German industrial-metalheads. I can hear some Ministry or even Pain influences on “Pirun nyrkki” as well. Goes with the territory, I guess. Ok, let me point out the obvious: “Pirun nyrkki” is straightforward industrial metal. Extremely heavy industrial metal, I might add. There’s loads of samples, technobeats, repeated/looped riffs and what not all over the place. There’s even a remix of one of their earlier songs done by DJ Proteus. It necessarily doesn’t make this album any better, but it sure as hell doesn’t make it any worse.
Lyricwise this effort is probably entertaining only for Finns, there’s few good songs here and there but the rest ain’t that special. Which necessarily ain’t such a bad thing, I don’t think they’re aiming for The Most Intellectual Lyrical Production -award in the first place. Turmion Kätilöt is all about the energy and power. And they succeed in this task.
Perfectly, I might add.
The only downside for this disc is the length. It’s only 35 minutes or so. Seriously, I could barely get “in the mood” and then this fucker is suddenly over. And little less reverb/effects on the vocals wouldn’t do any harm either.
This album gets some extra for the guest performance of Velcra’s vocalist, Jessi Frey. She fucken owns and it was nice to hear her performing in Finnish as well.
